Franklin Templeton and Ondo Finance bring 24/7 tokenized ETFs to crypto wallets
Franklin Templeton โ which oversees more than $1.6 trillion in assets โ announced this week a partnership with Ondo Finance to tokenize five of its ETFs, covering U.S. equities, fixed income, and gold. The products will be accessible directly through crypto wallets, bypassing traditional brokerage infrastructure and extending trading to around the clock, seven days a week. Under the structure, Ondo purchases shares of Franklin Templeton funds and issues tokens via a special-purpose vehicle, passing through economic exposure without transferring direct ownership of the underlying shares. The initial rollout targets non-U.S. markets โ Europe (via Ondo's Liechtenstein EEA regulatory passporting), Asia-Pacific, the Middle East, and Latin America โ while U.S. distribution awaits regulatory clarity on third-party on-chain fund distribution. Ondo has scaled rapidly since launching its equity product suite in September 2025, crossing $2.5 billion in TVL and $12 billion in cumulative trading volume. Franklin Templeton CEO Jenny Johnson has framed on-chain distribution as structural, not speculative, and the firm has been building blockchain infrastructure since its BENJI tokenized money market fund in 2021. ๐ฆ COMPANY MOVES
- BlackRock BUIDL โ The $2.7B tokenized money market fund added a Chronicle Protocol "verification layer" this week, enabling on-chain attestation of NAV, holdings, and liquidity data for third-party integrators and DeFi protocols. Chronicle, a decentralized oracle network originally spun out of MakerDAO, will provide cryptographically-signed price and NAV feeds โ a step toward making BUIDL composable with broader institutional DeFi. The move addresses a key friction point: smart contracts that accept BUIDL as collateral need reliable, auditable data about the fund's underlying value. (via The Block, March 26)
- NYSE ร Securitize โ The New York Stock Exchange's previously announced agreement with Securitize to explore blockchain-based trading of stocks and ETFs continues to be cited as a reference point by market participants following the Congressional tokenization hearing. No launch timeline has been confirmed publicly.
- Coinbase + Better Home & Finance โ The pair launched the first Fannie Mae-conforming mortgage product that allows borrowers to pledge Bitcoin or USDC as down payment collateral rather than liquidating holdings. On a $500,000 home requiring a $100,000 down payment, a borrower can pledge $250,000 in BTC held in Coinbase Prime custody to back a $100,000 overcollateralized loan โ with Bitcoin returned once the loan is repaid or refinanced. Liquidation triggers only on a 60-day payment delinquency, matching standard mortgage terms. The product operates alongside a conventional conforming loan and carries Fannie Mae's standard consumer protections. It represents the first formal integration of crypto-native assets into the $12 trillion U.S. residential mortgage market. (Decrypt)
โ๏ธ REGULATORY WATCH
Congress holds its most significant tokenization hearing to date. The House Financial Services Committee's digital assets subcommittee convened on March 25 for what market observers called a landmark session on real-world asset tokenization and the CLARITY Act โ the proposed legislative framework for digital asset regulation. Witnesses urged Congress to establish clear frameworks to prevent institutional token issuers and blockchain infrastructure providers from relocating to overseas jurisdictions. Rep. Maxine Waters drew attention at the session by raising conflict-of-interest concerns tied to the Trump family's crypto holdings and their potential to benefit from tokenization policy, injecting political friction into what had been a largely bipartisan policy discussion. Multiple witnesses, including legal representatives from tokenization-focused platforms, emphasized that regulatory ambiguity โ not technology gaps โ remains the primary obstacle to domestic market development. Separately, the SEC's December 2025 decision to close its investigation into Ondo Finance without bringing charges was cited repeatedly during the week as a signal of shifting enforcement posture toward compliant tokenized securities issuers.

๐ WORTH WATCHING
The mortgage market meets on-chain collateral. The Coinbase/Better Home & Finance/Fannie Mae product is worth watching beyond the headline. It demonstrates a maturing custody infrastructure โ Bitcoin held in Coinbase Prime qualifies as legitimate collateral for a conforming government-backed mortgage product. This is less about crypto enthusiasm and more about institutional custody reaching a threshold of credibility that regulators and GSE underwriters are willing to treat on par with traditional assets. If this structure is adopted more broadly, it could mark the beginning of tokenized and crypto-native assets becoming a standard input in mortgage underwriting โ not as exotic exceptions but as recognized collateral classes. The challenge: overcollateralization ratios (250% in the initial example) remain high, and liquidation mechanics in volatile crypto markets will face scrutiny. Whether this scales depends on whether lenders and GSEs develop more nuanced LTV frameworks for digital assets over time.
