๐Ÿ“Œ TOP STORY

12 European Banks Launch MiCAR-Compliant Euro Stablecoin via Fireblocks

Crypto custody firm Fireblocks is powering a bank-backed euro stablecoin through the newly formed Qivalis consortium โ€” a coalition of twelve major European institutions including BBVA, BNP Paribas, ING, UniCredit, SEB, DZ BANK, DekaBank, KBC, CaixaBank, Raiffeisen Bank International, Banca Sella, and Danske Bank. The token, regulated by the Dutch Central Bank and fully compliant with the EU's MiCA framework, is scheduled to launch in H2 2026.

The play is strategically timed: the stablecoin market hit $305 billion in January 2026, yet 99% remains dollar-denominated. Euro-pegged assets represent just $650 million despite the euro accounting for ~$1.1 trillion in daily FX volume. Qivalis is a direct institutional push to change that ratio. "Production-ready infrastructure that will meet MiCAR requirements, handle institutional volumes, and integrate seamlessly with existing banking systems," said Fireblocks CEO Michael Shaulov. ๐Ÿฆ COMPANY MOVES

  • The Clearing House โ€” The RTP network is advancing toward cross-border payments, beginning with EU-facing "one leg out" transactions and correspondent bank activity by September 2026. This puts bank-owned RTP in direct competition with digital asset settlement rails, Visa/Mastercard, and FedNow โ€” all racing to deliver instant international settlement. (American Banker)
  • KelpDAO / DeFi contagion โ€” A $290M exploit attributed to the Lazarus Group (North Korea) via a compromised LayerZero RPC node triggered a $14 billion DeFi exodus. Aave faces $124Mโ€“$230M in potential bad debt depending on how losses are allocated across rsETH holders. Arbitrum's security council froze $71M in bridged ETH. For institutional DeFi, the episode underscores that custody and counterparty risk remain the central unresolved challenge. (CoinDesk)
  • Ripple / XRPL โ€” Ripple published a four-phase quantum-resistance roadmap targeting full readiness by 2028. Phase 2 is already underway. Key implication: the XRPL carries a meaningful share of tokenized assets (including Ondo's yield assets), making infrastructure durability a live concern for institutional issuers building on-chain. (CoinDesk)

โš–๏ธ REGULATORY WATCH

A new American Banker analysis of its On-Chain Executive Summit and executive survey reveals the emerging two-speed dynamic in U.S. banking: large-cap institutions are actively piloting and deploying on-chain infrastructure (stablecoins, tokenized deposits, MMFs), while thousands of community and regional banks remain on the sidelines. The trigger is regulatory clarity โ€” the CLARITY Act, OCC master account approvals, and new DeFi licensing frameworks are driving a "high-stakes race to build the next generation of global payment infrastructure." The key risk the report flags: fragmentation. If on-chain networks can't interoperate, banks will build new walled gardens rather than a shared settlement layer. (American Banker)

๐Ÿ” WORTH WATCHING

The race for quantum-safe infrastructure is becoming a competitive differentiator. Ripple's four-phase XRPL quantum-resistance plan underscores a growing awareness: the institutional assets being tokenized today โ€” bonds, MMFs, treasuries โ€” will still need to settle reliably in 2030 and beyond. As quantum threats mature from theoretical to plausible, blockchain networks that can credibly demonstrate cryptographic longevity will hold an edge with risk-conscious institutional issuers. This is no longer just a developer exercise โ€” it's an infrastructure selection criterion.
